Welcome to the official travel site for the Great River Road and the Mississippi River states. The Great River Road follows the Mississippi River from its humble headwaters in the northwoods of Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. As you travel along the Great River Road and through the ten-state region, you'll discover a rich and diverse history, culture and landscape. Follow the natural current of this site Along and Beyond the river to create a Mississippi River experience just right for you.

One River. In the Travel Along the River section, you'll find yourself directly along the banks of the mighty Mississippi herself, where a journey on the historic Great River Road Scenic Byway awaits.

Ten States. The Travel Beyond the River section takes you off the beaten path of the River to explore the entirety of the states: (north to south) Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Great River RoadThe Great River Road was established in 1938 as the national parkway of the Mississippi River. Follow the green Pilot's Wheel road signs that mark its route nearly 3,000 miles through 10 states.
The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri (better know as the Gateway Arch), is the tallest monument in America. At 630 feet, it is more than twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty.
Favorite Places Along the River
Winona, Minnesota is a fun place to visit with an interesting mix of arts and nature. It has a Shakespeare Film Festival in the summer and a new Marine Art Museum opening soon.
